Kare Kare: An Annotated Recipe in Los Angeles Review
My latest essay, “Kare Kare: An Annotated Recipe” is up at Los Angeles Review. Kare kare is my favorite Filipino dish of peanut butter oxtail stew served over rice. My Lola made the best kare kare, and I’ve had no better since her passing. I started writing this essay in 2008 at CSU Summer Arts, Fresno, where essayist Steven Church introduced me to the annotated recipe form. During my graduate study, I was lucky enough to receive a Summer Arts scholarship and take Writing the Memoir with Doug Rice, Steven Church, Carole Maso, and William Vollmann. I set it aside for a long time before revising it, and I’m very proud to have it at Los Angeles Review.
